The BSFZ seal, which we recently received for our research activities, confirms that we are on the right track with this approach. We are delighted about the award, even though we’re not the type to boast. The potato processing industry is under pressure from two sides: On the one hand, the demand for efficiency and reliable processes is increasing and, on the other hand, sustainability, the efficient use of raw materials, and transparent technology are becoming increasingly important.

Getting started without foam: solutions for stable fermentation processes

Foam often forms in biogas plants, particularly when substrates change or the protein content is high.

Foam disrupts the fermentation process, but it can also cause overflows, blockages, and increased maintenance work. The common consequences include process interruptions and loss of revenue.

These challenges have been addressed by the development of two powerful defoamers – KEBOSPUM BWO and KEBOSPUM BWS – which are based on environmentally compatible ingredients and are tailored to the requirements of biogas plants.

They can be added directly to the fermenter or substrate stream and enable fast, reliable foam control without impairing biological activity in the fermenter.

The use of KEBOSPUM BWO or KEBOSPUM BWS improves process stability, reduces the maintenance requirements, and increases the operational reliability of the plant.

Best Practice Examples: No foam in biogas plants – with KEBOSPUM BWO

A recent best practice example from KEBO shows: The vegetable oil-based formulation of KEBOSPUM BWO defoamer reduces consumption by up to 90% (over 50% in the first 10 days), extends the cleaning intervals, and even saves sulfuric acid.

And it pays off:

✅ +20% system availability

✅ 100% performance

Conclusion: Less foam. More control. Finally, a stable process can run again.

📍 Starting situation:

• 25,000 tons of sugar beets in process

• Massive foam formation in the post-fermenter and during the pH correction of the decanter liquid

Rapeseed oil (2,000 ppm) has not been sufficiently effective to date, especially in the acidic pH range.

📍 The changeover:

Use of KEBOSPUM BWO with only 50-200 ppm

Within 10 days:

• No more foam in pH regulation

• Consumption lowered by over 50 percent

• Stable fermenter operation without overflow

📈 The effects on the overall process:

• Cleaning cycles cut in half (every 4 weeks instead of every 2 weeks)

• 20% higher system availability

• Combination with complementary products such as KEBOSPLEX SC and LITHSOLVENT 721 significantly extends the cleaning intervals.
