Hi Amanda Dumont,

New requirements regarding mandatory training and licensing for asbestos abatement work came into effect on January 1, 2024. This means that asbestos abatement contractors must now be licensed to operate in British Columbia, and anyone performing asbestos abatement work must now be trained and certified.

How does this apply to medical device providers in BC?

The changes put forth by the province of BC, are designed to provide regulations, ensuring proper training and licensing/certifications are available and exercised, for Contractors who are involved with Asbestos Abatement. This new directive may not materially change how Medical Equipment Providers are working; however, it is important to note that past directives and requirements still apply and may impact our services and highlight best practices. A medical provider may refuse to complete work where a dwelling is suspect of having asbestos within its envelope. It is not the responsibility of the Dealer to perform any testing on the dwelling envelope, nor is it their responsibility to incur the costs associated with the testing. The Dealer can request that the funder or habitant obtain testing, showing that the materials do not contain asbestos and hazardous materials prior to commencing an installation.

Regards,

HMEPA
