Elderly zoo penguin gets custom wetsuit
An older penguin at the Kansas City Zoo got a big quality-of-life upgrade after her care team created a custom wetsuit for her.
"Bridget, she is a 37-year-old gentoo. She is one of three of 37 that we have, so they are amongst the oldest in the country," Whitney Geslois, the Senior Animal Care Specialist at the Kansas City Zoo, said.
In the wild, penguins have a typical life expectancy of 15 years.
Because of her age, Bridget began having spinal issues, which prevented her from preening her feathers to keep her warm and waterproof.
So, zookeepers designed Bridget a custom wetsuit, a first for this zoo.
"She moves around really well. You can see she is able to move her wings up and down. She swims in it. There she is, just got out. She'll walk and play in the snow. She's able to be very mobile in it," Geslois said.
The zoo shared photos of Bridget in her wetsuit enjoying the snow and life with all the other penguins.
The care team takes off the wetsuit every night for her comfort and to ensure it does not snag on anything when they are not there.
